Description

The Manitoba Métis Federation (MMF) is the democratically elected National Government of the Red River Métis—the origin and core of the historic Métis Nation. The Red RIver Métis are Canada's Negotiating Partners in Confederation and the Founders of the Province of Manitoba, who represents over 120,000 Red River Métis Citizens throughout the Métis Nation, working to ensure the preservation of our language, culture, and history.

In July 2021, the MMF entered into a Self-Government Recognition and Implementation Agreement with the Government of Canada. In this agreement, the Government of Canada acknowledged that the MMF is the representative government of the Red River Métis and that we are responsible for providing responsible and accountable government for our Citizens whether living in or outside of Canada. And in June 2023, the Red River Métis unanimously accepted the Red River Métis Self Government Recognition and Implementation Treaty. The Treaty will go through Canada's ratification process and be introduced to the House of Commons to solidify its place in legislation and the Constitution of Canada. Once the implementation legislation is passed, the Red River Métis Government and our Nation will be enshrined in our country's constitution.

The MMF is excited to attend and to participate at COP28, with the goals ofrepresenting the Red River Métis internationally, amplifying the voices of Indigenous Peoples, highlighting the important role that the Red River Métis play in conservation and as stewards of biodiversity, and addressing Red River Métis concerns relating to biodiversity loss and climate change. The MMF plans to showcase Red River Métis-specific environmental programming and initiatives that are working towards conservation of biodiversity, while highlighting sustainable-use practices of the Red River Métis in our traditional economies and the monitoring efforts of the MMF to assess and triage protection and conservation efforts with a focus on climate action.
