Description

This side event in the Indigenous Pavilion, titled “An interactive dialogue between Indigenous Peoples delegations and the UN Special Rapporteur on the promotion and protection of Human Rights in the Context of Climate Change” will be carried out in a dialogue format after brief opening remarks. It is intended to assist Indigenous delegates attending COP 28 to understand the mandate and current priorities of this Special Rapporteur and how to submit relevant communications regarding human rights violations related to the causes, effects and false solutions to climate change. It will also provide an opportunity for them to share urgent situations they are facing and to recommend themes for his upcoming studies. It will be hosted and moderated by the International Indian Treaty Council, co-sponsored by the IITC and the office of the UN Special Rapporteur Dr. Ian Fry. Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Francisco "Pancho" Cali has also been invited to contribute based on his mandate, has expressed interest, and is currently assessing his ability to attend COP 28.
