Working with Inuit on climate action: Inuit Protocols for Equitable and Ethical Engagement

  • Indigenous Peoples Pavilion - COP28 Blue Zone, Zone B7, Building 88 (map)

Organisation

Inuit Circumpolar Council

Description

Inuit, the original inhabitants of the circumpolar Arctic, are experiencing climate change 3-4 times faster than the rest of the world. While Inuit have been bringing this message to the international stage since the Rio Summit over 30 years ago, our Arctic homeland — Inuit Nunaat — continues to be on the frontline. The Arctic environment can only be protected through ethical and equitable partnerships with Inuit and our knowledge. Inuit Rights, knowledge, and leadership must be at the forefront of national and international discussions of developing adaptive and holistic approaches needed in today’s rapidly changing environment. Inuit have developed and launched the Circumpolar Inuit Protocols for Equitable and Ethical Engagement (EEE Protocols) which are intended to guide policymakers, researchers, funders, industry, and others in engaging Inuit in an equitable, ethical, fair, just, and meaningful manner that respects our distinct rights as Indigenous Peoples. This session will explain key elements from the EEE Protocols and share examples of where they can, and have, been used in international fora. The question period will allow for a dialogue with the audience on complementary, adjacent, or conflicting approaches to working together.
