Description

The first half of the presentation will be held by COIAB: Indigenous peoples have been directly affected by the consequences of climate change. Climate change, heat intensification, changes in hydrological cycles (extreme droughts and floods) have been the reality every year for the people of the Amazon. These changes directly affect the production of food, culture, life and have strongly potentiated emerging diseases such as malaria, leishmaniasis, hepatitis A, diarrhea, dengue fever and the distribution of new strains of arboviruses and also the impacts of direct diseases such as mercury in indigenous peoples originating from illegal mining. Thus, COIAB seeks to present a portrait of indigenous villages in this current scenario of climate change in the Amazon.

The second half will be held by members of the Brazilian indigenous tribe Yawanawá in collaboration with AYNI ALLIANCE. The talk will focus on the importance of indigenous people for the preservation of the rainforest and their role in climate change mitigation. Pai Nani, one of the Yawanawá spiritual leaders, will give insight into their history, culture and lives, their role in the forest, and the environmental and social challenges they face.
