Climate change in Sápmi: an overview and a path forward

  • Indigenous Peoples Pavilion - COP28 Blue Zone, Zone B7, Building 88 (map)

Organisation

Saami Council

Description

Climate change impacts in the Arctic are occurring at a magnitude and pace unprecedented in recent history, and much faster than projected for other regions of the world. For Sápmi, climate change is estimated to have far-reaching consequences for nature, ecosystems and their composition, and thus for the entire Sámi cultural landscape. As we, the Sámi people, have a strong connection to the land through our cultural practices, traditions and livelihoods, changes in environmental conditions have a direct impact on our society.

In collaboration with the Sámi Parliament in Norway, the Saami Council has during 2023 produced the report "Climate change in Sápmi: an overview and a path forward". This side event will present the report and its findings – i.e provide an overview of climate change in Sápmi and its effects on Sámi culture, livelihoods and society - and be followed by a dialogue with Sámi representatives.

Speakers

Key note: Gunn-Britt Retter, head of Saami Council's Arctic and Environmental Unit, presenting Saami Council's 2023 report "Climate change in Sápmi: an overview and a path forward" with following dialogue with Sámi representatives/knowledge holders (TBC)
